Personally, I believe that your Black friday will be a non-starter in the middle of a rising trend for the SPX. This uptrend will likely last until the week of 9/22-9/26/08 with the SPX selling at somewhere around 1400. If you like full moon stuff, Mercury turns retrogade from 9/24-10/16/08, which often presents a rough patch for US securities markets. Also, 9/08/08 could set up an interesting trade.

Hey I just did some calculating too....but I think I better not share it out of politeness with the rest of the community.
Say, when is the next triple witching day? Is it the 19th of September?

opinions are worthless unless supported by fact. I advise you to use some in order to prevent yourself from sounding like a fool.

yes, next triple witch is September 19. You going to play any options or just swing on the volatility?

Interesting theory. I don't suppose you'd care to show us the numbers?

nextfundmanager, the triple witching hour is the last hour of trading on the last Friday of every March, June, September and November. It is when certain options contracts expire all at the same time and generally increases the market's volatility. You can find a more detailed explanation here:

Did I say November? December. Sorry. Triple witching hour happens four times a year at the end of the quarter. The "triple" refers to stock index futures, stock market index options and stock options.
It's one of those picturesque stock market expressions like "dead cat bounce" or "nekkid short sale".
|
|
|
|
|
|
just a small correction. Triple witching is actually the third (not last) friday of the third month of each quarter.

based on the comments of the original post and the applicability of the drop to all stocks are we to assume that on that date all stocks are to have a beta of 1?

Only if the moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter aligns with mars, allstarinvestor.
Otherwise, its an Uday and Qusay moment.

We don't know about a crash on a specific date, but, we don't believe that the market has seen the lows and our signals still show that there will be significant additional downside in the commodities, financials, consumer discretionary and technology sectors. We are negative on GOOG, BIDU, POT, IPI, AGU, MOS, GS, MER, ICE, FSLR to name a few. We have all our our details at supertradetimer.com and we also are offering a free 2 week trial for new members right now.

Supertradetime Team, almost all of those are major bubble stocks anyway. Based on volume alone you can say that they would be inflated by 10 - 15% above anything close to fair market value. Of course many of them will tank. It's not hard to pick those ones out - why don't you try a short on SNY - pick up 20 - 30% over the next year or so. Everyone's positive on them, but they will definitely hammer down.

DJIA up 197.85 (1.731%)
NASDAQ Composite up 34.33 (1.43%)
S&P 500 up 14.48 (1.33%)
Unless you're calling these numbers a crash, your calculations seem off.
Want to try again?

Obviously, sumer_kolcak was wrong, and my guess is that he/she wasn't even trying to be taken seriously. But this thread does raise some questions that are worth thinking about.
Since he/she seems to have dropped off the grid, I propose that we give some thought to why we don't believe outlandish predictions and how to tell whether a prediction is really outlandish.
Bear Stearns, GM and Enron come to mind. What factors go into the conclusion that a company is heading for hard times or worse? Is it the "calculations" that sumer_kolcak alluded to but never demonstrated? Or is it something more insubstantial, a kind of woo-woo fluttering in the solar plexus? Or is it an apparently unrelated item on the Making Money page of IBD?
Any thoughts?

He is correct. The market crashes on August 22. This may be the 23rd but it did crash. All the astrological signs pointed to it. He just forgot to inform us that the year is 2108 not 2008. Be prepared.
