A New Global Healthcare Composite Index

The accompanying table [click to enlarge or download] presents the top five rated companies with market caps of at least $250M from each of the 10 new healthcare indexes developed by ETF Innovators [ETFI] from a database of about 500 companies worldwide. The ETFI Global Healthcare Sector PerformIdex consists of 50 top rated companies on an equal weight basis from each of the 10 new healthcare indexes as an alternative strategy to existing health composite ETFs with highly correlated returns and over-weight exposure to the same widely held companies such as Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Pfizer (PFE), Novartis (NVS), Abbott Labs (ABT), Merck (MRK), and Amgen (AMGN).

1.) ETFI Global Hospitals – Fresenius Medical (FMS)
2.) ETFI New Drug Regulatory Catalyst – Genentech (DNA)
3.) ETFI Global AnimalBiz – PetMed Express (PETS)
4.) ETFI Health Benefit Providers – PharMerica PMC)
5.) ETFI Cosmetic & Reconstructive Medicine – Osiris Therapeutics (OSIR)
6.) ETFI Healthcare Cost Containment – Perrigo (PRGO)
7.) ETFI Global Health Information Technology – Quality Systems (QSII)
8.) ETFI Preventive Medicine – Emergent BioSolutions (EBS)
9.) ETFI Global Health Innovators – Thoratec (THOR)
10.) ETFI Emerging Bio-Pharma – Dendreon (DNDN)

Click on any of the links above to view the most recent article and top rated companies from each of the underlying healthcare indexes, which results in an alternative indexing strategy for the global healthcare sector by giving each company an equal weight status and choosing the top five rated companies from 10 different health indexes. The index of 50 companies posted a gain of 10% over the past year, compared to losses of 30%-40% for benchmark health composite ETFs (which provided little in the way of a safe haven) such as Healthcare SPDR (XLV), iShares S&P Global Healthcare (IXJ), Vanguard HC (VHT), Rydex HC (RYH), iShares U.S. HC (IYH), and PowerShares HC (PTH).
