they need to dance, all said and done they are not really seen as leaders in the market. they need to add to their portfolio to get back in the good books of innovation buyers.
grabbing hold of a shrinking market gets them to posiion innovation on that market as a leader and expand it.
also, most ibm buyers have more than 5 other significant vendors in the hardware, software and consulting space, leaving big holes for them to be marginal plays in those accounts in 2-3 years, they are not there today, they have to do that building on their equity in the market.
