Although BKS may seem like it may be losing traction to an iPad revolution in books, a closer examination finds the opposite. It all starts with the riddle: how can more exuberance over reading affect a book store? Well, a particularly important lesson we must all be aware of was that of Blockbuster. Although, I called the demise of Blockbuster in 2006 (a short while after graduating college), it was clear as to why that was necessarily the case: culture. Could you go to a Blockbuster and buy a cup of coffee (SBUX)? Could you go there and browse all sorts of media not limited to movies? (Heck, you couldn't even browse the movies). Now, I know what you may be thinking, that you can browse media far better on iTunes than in Barnes and Noble, yet you would be both right and wrong. To make you feel better about yourself, I'll start with why you are right. In iTunes, you can browse songs, possibly (unsure yet) read a couple of pages out of a book, and listen to radio stations (an underutilized feature of iTunes, indeed). In fact, you can still do the same things on Amazon. I mean, you are aware Amazon has offered purely electronic books for a good 5 years now, you are aware of that, correct? Yet, every time I go into a Barnes & Noble, I see people. I see the majority around the coffee shop, a little less around magazines, and then it becomes a crap-shoot as to where else you'll find them (the music section would be a good bet). So here's the ticket for a BKS success in the world of iPad. First: buy a wireless carrier or better yet align with a near ubiquitous wiresless carrier. Why? Simple, people come into your stores often times not to books, but to browse them. If you're able to integrate an internet plan WITHIN B&N memberships, think of the possibilities! People can go to ANY B&N, enter in their code, and presto prego they are on the internet and enjoying a nice, licenced cup of coffee (we're coming up to the summer months, all you SBUX fanatics... caffeine addicts). Second, make sure that iPad app beats the iPad crap out of all the competition. Bring in social media, bring in whatever you have to, make it the best thing you've seen ever. Because although IBM invented the computer, the software behind it made even more money. If you create software for the device that rocks the house, I mean rocks it, you'll be able to capitalize on the iPad. Third, and I mean this, forget that stupid f---ing Nook. Look, it was cool, WAS. I don't see an iWAS selling in Apple stores, selling out (yes, it is true, apple pre-ordered literally millions of touchscreens months before the iPad was released, my official estimate is pre-orders in the millions and I'm not afraid to admit it). Forget it, it's a loser, focus on the software behind the books. Right now their market cap is under $2B. In fact, it's about $1.29B at the time of this reading. For all of BKS? With a couple of right moves, that could be the steal of the decade. Long BKS absent some cosmically neadrotholic management blunder i.e. not going full steam ahead on the increased popularity of print media... aka... their Forté. And a bonus: renogitate with BKS already you nimrods! YOU have the locations now, not them. All you have to do is an old switcheroo and they're out, let the bidding war come to you. Believe it or not, the ball is now in your court. Good luck!
