Merck bought Sirna Therapeutics for the potential of RNAi to become an entirely new class of drug. Alnylam has many partnerships (Novartis, Merck, Medtronic) to share the burden of drug discovery and development. A recent follow-on stock offering has brought them to a cash balance of greater than $200M. They only plan to burn about $35M in 2007, so they will be viable for quite a long time even if they face setbacks. More compounds should enter clinical trials this year for various diseases and conditions, including Pandemic flu.
