As a diabetic and as a former co-manager for an offshore private wealth fund, I have long-followed the diabetic drug market, the large pharmas, and the small-cap biotech companies in that space. <!--more-->The global diabetes market affects approximately 246 million people worldwide and this number is increasing. The World Health Organization projects that diabetics will increase to 300 million by 2011. And, the International Diabetes Federation predicts 380 million diabetics by 2025.

The Global Diabetes drug treatment market was valued at over $21 billion in 2006 and the market is still expanding rapidly due to the high prevalence of diabetes and lifestyle changes. There are many companies hoping to capture a portion of that rapidly expanding market.

Furture more, the broader segment of diabetics and their support groups have never heard of this new delivery system for insulin. I firmly believe that when this product is featured in a news story on a major network, that the American investment community will go crazy for it. At least temporarily, until the cost of Oral-lyn keeps it off of the drug list for major insurers in favor of much cheaper insulin delivery systems. I also believe that, in time, insurance providers will succumb to public and government pressure to include this more comfortable method of insulin delivery in the covered drugs portion of their policies. I worked on the Exubera project as a clinical research monitor and I can tell you that the excitement over an alternative to needles can not be over estimated.
