Long on RNAi Science

RNAi is a great technology that will create a great drug pipeline. Alnylam is at the forefront, as is Sirna, which I would have bought had I done my proper research and Merck beat me to the punch with an acquisiton.
The risk here is classic biotech risk - can they actually produce working/approvable therapeutics and how much cash will it take to get them there?
This is a long-term hold - ALNY will have volatility, but is an option with tons of upside at the end of the day.

Merck bought Sirna Therapeutics for the potential of RNAi to become an entirely new class of drug. Alnylam has many partnerships (Novartis, Merck, Medtronic) to share the burden of drug discovery and development. A recent follow-on stock offering has brought them to a cash balance of greater than $200M. They only plan to burn about $35M in 2007, so they will be viable for quite a long time even if they face setbacks. More compounds should enter clinical trials this year for various diseases and conditions, including Pandemic flu.
