Buy Low, Sell High: Right Time for the Former

Contrary to consumer behavior in retail, investors tend to shy away from the stock market when shares are cheap, but seem to be drawn to it like moths to a flame during market bubbles, when prices are highly inflated.<!----> In its June 2008 issue, The Wall Street Journal’s magazine “Smart Money” published a chart showing how investors are pulling money out of mutual funds during down markets. In other words, they are selling low.
<>Another example: Between 1973 and 2002, NASDAQ stocks gained an annual average of 9.6%. Yet, on average, investors only earned about 4.3% annually. On>...

<> Readers: I write to share with you my recent decision to increase my exposure to foreign stocks for my longer term portfolio. I most recently wrote to you about my two favorite foreign stock plays in The Netherlands and Malaysia . Each of those countries are doing well and my outlook remains bullish for them. I am now going to suggest a third country play. For international investing, I like starting with a country and then working my way down to stocks. If I cannot get a good feel for any individual companies, but remain bullish on the country, I simply pick-up an ETF. If you are>...

Alvarion recently released quarterly results, and they looked good. Revenue was slightly better than estimates, as was EPS (0.03 vs. estimate of 0.02). Next quarter's guidance is also good, as it calls for revenue of $49-53M (estimate of 50M) and EPS of 0.01 to 0.04 (estimate of 0.01). Q4 BreezeMAX revenue was $24M, which was nearly 50% of total revenue; they also had 7 deals over $1M, with Q4 gross margin of 52%. As a larger proportion of revenue is attributable to BreezeMAX, their true revenue growth will be visible (i.e. not obscured by stagnant revenue in legacy products).
