<> Although not completely immune from the current global economic slowdown, many telecom services companies are currently yielding higher amounts than tobacco companies and the Utilities Select Sector SPDR (XLU). Although many of the foreign telecom companies included in the ETFI Global Telco Services Dividend Income Index issued special one-time dividends over the past year which inflates their trailing 12-month yield; both Verizon (VZ) and AT&T (T) are currently yielding over 6% each while trading at multi-year lows. Leap, MetroPCS: Goldman Downgrades As Competition Heats Up; Both Stocks Fall
Goldman Sachs analyst Jason Armstrong this morning cut his ratings on both Leap Wireless (LEAP) and MetroPCS (PCS) to Neutral from Buy. He cut his price target on LEAP to $16, from $26; for PCS he goes to $7, from $14. Armstrong writes that catalysts for the stocks remain negative, as competition in the pre-paid cellular market continues to intensify. He says upcoming quarterly reports are likely to disappoint. <>Armstrong notes that Sprint’s (S) Boost Mobile pre-paid unit is having a “very strong quarter,” while the Tracfone unit of American Movil (AMX) has rolled out nationwide service >...

The already intensively competitive wireless sector today finds itself with a tough new player: Wal-Mart (WMT). The retailing giant has teamed up with American Movil (AMX) to sell low-cost service under the Straight Talk brand. The company is offering unlimited voice and text minutes for $45 a month, or 1,000 minutes and 1,000 text messages for $30 a month. Filed under: Stocks to Buy Double-digit subscriber growth means good things for America Movil SAB de CV (NYSE: AMX), hence I'm Reiterating my Buy rating for the company, first recommended on June 24, 2009 at a price of $36.47. If you purchased AMX in June, you're up about 30%.
America, is another one of those large caps that was rudely treated by Wall Street, which took shares down to about $25 from the mid-$60s in FY2008. That was a mistake, because all the while AMX, the largest wireless service provider in Latin America, has been expanding its presence in two important emerging markets: Br...
