One word to describe this pick: merger but you might wonder what the terms of the merger is, and if it is indeed a merger, in which case the market would see, like i do, that this stock has as of now a 31% premium coming, then why is it's stock where it is? the answer is simple. this is a merger, and as such, is subject to the same predictable behavior as all other merger companies. the stock, whose deal will close in more than 2 months, does not have the demand right now because the market is waiting to see how things play out. That fact is constant in every merger, the most recen< />< /><><>>>< />< />< />< />< />< /><><>< />>><><>< />>>< /><>>< />< /><><>>>< /><>>...

Chinese Stimulus Will Stay to Achieve 8% GDP Growth
<>Last Thursday, the world learned China achieved 8.9% in Q3 based on year over year, while for the first three quarters the nation achieved 7.7% GDP growth year over year. Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) Finalizes Foundation Coal (FCL) Deal to Secure #3 Spot in US
|

It's been a while since we've looked at the coal space - we own one name as a small position, but this was a theme that was one of our big winners in late 2007 and 1st half 2008. Further, we made a strategic shift from thermal coal to metallurgical coal in the spring of 2008 just before the companies with an emphasis on metallurgical made a huge surge. Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) was our top dog - just imagine the joy we felt as one of our top positions was in the news as a source of a buyout offer by iron ore company Cleveland Cliffs (CLF). Our out performance for 2008 would jump even...

Coal was one of our best performing sector groups in latter 2007 through summer 2008. While much of the focus of late has been on natural gas, the coal stocks have been ripping in even larger magnitude. I was a bull on coal over natural gas (although the market in its student body left trading simply moves all commodities together) because of the portability of coal over natural gas. We were early on this theme as the market was so focused on oil stocks at the time, and made a lot of money [Dec 6, 2007: Coal Stocks Quietly in Bull Market] I wrote a bevy of pieces about this 1.5 years ago...
