Atheros Communications (ATHR) shares are getting a boost from a pair of analyst upgrades.

  • Roth Capital analyst Arnab Chandra this morning boosted his rating on the stock to Buy from Hold, while increasing his price target to $21, from $16.50. The stock closed yesterday at $17.89. He says the company has spent the last two years transforming itself from a pure play wireless LAN chip company to a diversified wired and wireless connectivity supplier, with offers in wireless LAN, Ethernet, GPS and Bluetooth, and a total addressable market of $4 billion to $5 billion.

    Atheros Rallies; Deutsche Bank Upgrades To Buy Rating

    Atheros Communications (ATHR) shares are on the rise this morning after Deutsche Bank analyst Jonathan Goldberg raised his rating on the WiFi chip maker to Buy from Hold, with a new price target of $25, up from $17. Yesterday, the stock closed at $16.18.

    Goldberg says checks at this weeks Computex trade show in Taipei and meetings with company management lead him to conclude that the company will return to top-line growth. He sees shares gains across the company’s product lines, and expects PC demand to at least stabilize if not improve.

    Chips: Morgan Stanley Turns Bullish; The Restock Rally

    Morgan Stanley semiconductor analyst Mark Lipacis this morning raised his rating on the chip sector to Attractive from In-Line, and shifting his recommendations on a variety of semi names. Note that while he is more bullish overall, he actually downgraded more stocks than he upgraded, and in particular is cautious on telecom-related names.

    Lipacis notes that the SOX index is up 41% off the November 2008 bottom, with a 14% gain year to date. But he contends we are “in the early innings of the cycle,” with 25%-40% upside remaining in hits Overweight rated pick in the coming 6-12 months.

    Atheros Communications (ATHR) shares are sliding today, pressured by a pair of negative research notes. The big issue: pricing pressure in the market for WiFi chips.
