Atheros Q3 Revs, EPS Tops Estimates

Atheros (ATHR) this afternoon posted better-than-expected third quarter results.
For Q3, the WiFi chip maker posted revenue of $138.1 million and profits of 37 cents a share; the Street had expected $137.6 million and 35 cents. The company did not provide any guidance in its press release.
Atheros which rose 21 cents, or 1.3% to $16.13 in the regular session, has backed off 3 cents after hours.

As we head into Q3 earnings season, the prospects for the chip industry are looking grim. <>In a report called “Heading Into a Storm,†Needham semiconductor analyst N. Quinn Bolton this morning cautioned that we are likely headed for a below-seasonal Christmas selling season, and lower-than-expected Q4 results for semiconductor companies. Bolton added that “tighter credit may restrict companies’ ability to fund working capital and capital expenditures,†resulting in weak IT spending and carrier cap ex at least through the first half of 2009. Atheros (ATHR) shares are moving lower in late trading despite strong Q2 results and Q3 guidance that topped Street expectations For Q2, the WiFi chip provider posted revenue of $121.5 million and non-GAAP profits of 31 cents a share, beating the Street consensus of $120.8 million and 30 cents. <>On the company’s post-earnings conference call with the Street, the company said it expectes revenue growth of 13%-15% sequentially, which would suggest a range of $137.3 million to $139.7 million, above the Street’s old view of $132.8 million.
