The following is a reprint of my January 18, 2007 RealMoney column.

Oracle’s (ORCL - Annual Report) agreement to meet BEA Systems (BEAS) half-way on price was hailed by InfoWeek as making Oracle a middleware powerhouse. “Among other things, BEA will add to Oracle its WebLogic and AquaLogic SOA and BPM tools, as well as its Tuxedo transaction processing monitoring software. BEA’s Java Virtual Machine technology also could push Oracle deeper into the hot market for virtualization software,” said the article.

In the Figure you can see a summary of the trend conditions of the Index stocks. I used the 20, 50, 100 and 200 days moving average of the close. The background is Green when the close is > than the moving average. Red when it is below and yellow when it crosses. + and - indicate the slope of the moving average. In the Stoch column to the right I put also the Stochastic. Red means oversold, green overbought, yellow means values between 20 and 80.You can also find the candlestick patterns printed.

Billionaire investor Carl Icahn acquired stakes in Genzyme Corporation(NDAQ:GENZ) and Harrah's Entertainment Inc. (NYSE:HET) after selling his stakes in Kraft Foods Inc. (NYSE:KFT) and Clear Channel Communications Inc. (NYSE:CCU), according to a Schedule 13F filing released Wednesday. Shareholders are hoping that the activist investor will work to unlock value in some of these new investments.
