Borders is underperforming for a big company in this sector. Recent pick up of the web site from AMZN will likely add to turn around and bring BGP into the internet marketplace more vigorously where it was lacking which should increase it's competitiveness. It is a bargain now, the question is do you believe that BGP can turn things around and grow. I do.

So, the race to $0 book prices continues. As the AP notes this morning, the fierce price cutting in the book business, which until now had focused largely on pre-orders, has now spread to current works: Amazon.com (AMZN) is offering both John Grisham’s short-story collection Ford County and Barbara Kingsolver’s new novel The Lacuna for $9 apiece. As an avid reader, I can’t see any reason to complain about this. As the Wall Street Journal notes this morning, Amazon (AMZN) and Wal-Mart (WMT) are suddenly locked in a ferocious price war over book prices. Wal-Mart yesterday chopped the prices on 10 much-anticipated new titles to $10; Amazon quickly matched the move. Then WMT went to $9; and Amazon has now followed suit. Recently sold 1/2 of my position in Borders Group (BGP) after sticking out its near annihilation in Q1 of this year.
Why? Trends
There are two new trends and Borders is not at the head of either of them....
I own a Blackberry and have started listening to books on it while I do research and blog late at night. The #1 app for the Blackberry to do this is from Audible.com. Who owns Audible? Amazon (AMZN). Being a Borders shareholder and a team player I of course looked there first but was unable to find the ability to buy a title on Borders.com and then listen to it on my Blackberry.
