BHP is looking very strong financially and is well placed to ride out the recession. They have no debt, and a great history of profitability (5-yr average RoA 19%, avg net margin 25%). This year's profit won't be as good as last year's record, of course, but BHP is in much better shape than its competition to not only survive the recession, but to take advantage of acquisition opportunities that might arise while the competition is struggling to service their debts. When the economy recovers, BHP will emerge significantly stronger relative to its competitors. Watch for the half...

Top miner BHP Billiton , bidding for rival Rio Tinto in what would be the world's second-biggest takeover , posted a 12.4 percent rise in full-year net profit to a record $15.4 billion , as Chinese demand stoked a commodities boom. Year-to-end-June net profit was up from $13.4 billion the previous year and in line with analysts' forecast. Shares in BHP, the world's biggest mining company , have fallen 5.4 percent this year to Friday's close, outperforming Australia's S&P/ASX 200 resources sector subindex , which is off 9 percent. <> BHP declared a final di>...

Bookkeeping: Bought BHP Billiton (BHP)

As I am reviewing trading history for the week, I missed a limit buy order that went off late Friday. On Monday, we had sold just about all our BHP Billiton (BHP) [Oct 26, 2009: Bookkeeping - Sold Most of BHP Billiton (BHP) - Looking to Rebuy Soon] in the mid $72s anticipating some dollar strength to knock these commodity stocks down.
<><>However, since we are SO overdue for at least a few day rally in the pig (with lipstick on) that is the US dollar I'll take almost all the rest off here, and see if we can get our cost basis lowered. Commodity based stocks, in particular, would get trashed i< />><>< />><>< />>>< />< />< /><><>< />>< />>< />< />< />< /><>>< />< />< /><><><>><>>< />>>< />< />< />< />< />< />< /><><>< />>< />>< />< /><>><>< />><><>< />><>< />><>< />><>< />><>< />>>< />...

Bright Spots In The Market...Visa, DeVry and Nutrisystem
|
|
|
The market's cautious bias that began last week has picked up a bit of momentum.
As for today's market, earnings are once again becoming a key factor. The bright spots from today's results includes Visa (V), DeVry (DV) and Nutrisystem (NTRI). On the not-so-hot list were the results from SAP (SAP), Jones Lang Lasalle (JLL) and Massey Energy (MEE).
The commodity sector is seeing some heavy selling hit shares of Agnico-Eagle Mines (AEM), U.S. Steel (X), Peabody Energy (BTU) and BHP Billiton (BHP). Where is that money going? How about into shares of AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ), which are both tradi...

I personally think it is pathetic the entire market, with all these trillions of dollars, sophisticated computer systems, and PhDs galore has become nothing more than a 1st grade math equation
dollar up = everything down
dollar down = everything up
but this is the monster we've created... thanks HAL9000. The weak dollar trade is sickening in how crowded it is but I said that 3 weeks ago, 7 weeks ago, etc. "Long technology" was crowded in fall 1999, didn't stop it from continuing as a gold mine for another 6 months. As we've said, when everyone is on one side of the boat it is fine and dand< />< /><>>< />< /><><>< />>< />>< />< />< />< /><>><>>< />< />< />< /><><>< />>< />>< />< /><>><>< />><><>< />><>< />><>< />><>< />><>< />>>< />...
