The semis have shown a bit of strength recently. BRCM has held its own over the last week in the face of the market turmoil and recently formed a double bottom support in the $14 range. I'm looking at the Jan 2011 LEAPS calls. Since they are so far out, only the $15 strike has sufficient open interest for me to touch. The Jan '10 LEAPS calls don't offer much better OI than the '11s in the lower strikes so if I jump in it would probably be with the 2011's for the modest difference in price at the same strike which would give me a year more of time.

They make chips for apple. That should be enough to help with your purchase. Also, they have an increasing customer base and have the best technology around.

BRCM will probably supply chips to the new version of the apple iPhone. This will bost their sales, especially if the iPhone sells well. Its a good double hitter if you invest in both Apple and BRCM.

Even if Apple does bad, BRCM still has a new chip out that will be most likely used in a new mobile device.

Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) reported mixed financial results for its fourth quarter of fiscal 2009. Quarterly revenue of $2.69 billion was down 19% year-over-year and was down 2% sequentially. This was primarily due to lower sales of the company’s wireless chipsets and other related technologies. Fourth quarter revenue was also below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.71 billion. On a GAAP basis, quarterly net income was $803 million or 48 cents per share. This was down 9% year-over-year and also down 9% sequentially. Morgan Turns Cautious On Chips, Semi Equipment; Downgrades Many Stocks

Morgan Stanley this morning turned cautious on both the chip stocks and the semiconductor equipment sector, downgrading ratings on many names in the group.

The 60-minute trend is down according to the force index indicator. %b has printed a slightly positive divergence. Finally prices have moved quickly to the downside. The Nasdaq is underperforming the Dow and the S&P. In fact, the breakout of the rising trendline has already occurred. On Thursday prices retested the trendline and Friday accelerated to the downsode quite impressively. Support at 1650. Then 1590. Roth Capital Cuts Intel, Several Chips

Roth Capital Partners analyst Arnab Chanda this morning lowered his rating on several chip stocks to “Hold” from “Buy,” citing the risk of a modest inventory build given high projeced margins and growth at Intel (INTC), Marvell (MRVL), Nvidia (NVDA) and others.

“Overall, we’re getting the sense that lead times in the semi industry have gone up a lot. There may be orders that are ‘phantom,’ or double-orders,” Chanda told me in a phone conversation this morning.
