CA Inc. (CA) said CEO John Swainson plans to retire by December 31, or upon the selection of a successor. The company has formed a search committee a new chief. He will also leave the company’s board.

Swainton, who has been at the software company for five years, said in a statement that “this is the opportune time to transition to new leadership as CA begins its drive to the nexct level.”

Recently, I was talking to a reporter and they asked me if I ever highlight anything good in the filings and it reminded me of how we used to do this thing called “Gold Star Fridays” where we tried to focus on good corporate behavior. But it’s been forever — well, February — since we last footnoted a company for doing the right thing.

Goldman Sachs software analyst Sarah Friar, in a note dated yesterday but making the rounds today, writes that the U.S. software market is looking better, with “further signs of stabilizaition” and “early signs of recovery.”  She expects IT budgets to “loosen further” as the year comes to a close.

CA Inc. (CA) this morning announced that it had acquired certain data center automation and “policy-based optimization” expertise and assets from Cassatt Corp., a once-hot start-up based in San Jose. (The company’s Web site at cassatt.com seems to be down.) Terms were not disclosed. Cassatt CTO Rob Gingell and Chief Scientist Steve Oberlin will join CA, along with other developers and engineers. CA also gets several patents and patent applications and other IP.
