NASDAQ Technical Picture - Lower Trendline Holding

The NASDAQ dropped in opening trade due to higher than expected CPI inflation data. Both the Nasdaq and Dow held near trendline support off the Jan-Feb lows. Narrow range trade dominated in the early going followed by a range BO triggering some midday follow through into positive territory. Choppy trade leading into the FOMC minutes was resolved with new session highs despite the Fed cutting its GDP forecast and raising its inflation and jobless forecasts.

Inflation Concerns Weigh On Market Early
The market is weak out of the gate due to some slightly elevated readings on inflation today. Core CPI rose +0.3% m/m vs. expectations of +0.2%. This is worrisome, as the Fed does not like to lower rates when inflation is rising. But weaker economic growth usually leads to declining inflation.

Surge in Refi Index Crushes 30 Yr Treasury into the Feb 20 CPI Report

The Mortgage Banker’s Association’s refinancing index spiked to its highest lever since March 2004, as consumers step up to the plate to take advantage of the Fed’s 125 of rate cuts in January.

There were a few other bullish housing data points for the economy today. The National Home Builders Association Index appears to have stabilized, upticking from 18 in December to 20 in February. WMT posting higher than expected sales has me thinking the consumer is no longer going after specialty stores.  This could be a huge signal the US Consumer is drastically cutting back in hopes to increase the bottom line.

Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday. I've been sitting around reading the news and getting ready to tackle the coming weeks which will no doubt continue to see volatile trading. This market, not really sure where it wants to go, has been reacting violently both up and down to new data points. You can make a good profit playing off of these news releases if you know what to expect, though keep in mind the reactions can be very short lived.
