Inflation Up: Bernanke Will Sit Tight

Much has been said about Bernanke & Co. the past four months. Despite it all, this is the truest test of his Chairmanship to date.<>

On Friday consumer inflation numbers were released. The CPI jumped 0.8% in November, crushing October's 0.3% rise. It was largest increase since September 2005. The core CPI, excluding volatile food and energy prices, advanced 0.3%, it biggest rise since January. The results passed Wall Street forecasts of a 0.6% headline CPI increase and 0.2% core gain.

Now, IF the Fed is truly in a neutral stance and is not being told what to do by the markets, then they CANN...

Week in Review #50 (2007-12-16)

I won’t sugarcoat this: Goldilocks died. Inflation is surging in the US for both producers (PPI) and consumers (CPI), which has brought an end to the 2002-2007 Bull market. The market topped out in October. From that point, global equity markets will experience a series of lower lows and lower highs, which is the definition of a Bear market.

Market Frets Slightly Over Inflation Data
The market is slightly lower in early trading on a CPI report that showed inflation rose more than expected in November. I would be surprised if inflation continued to rise in the face of an economic slowdown, energy prices notwithstanding.

Citigroup (C) had its long-term rating downgraded by Moody's, which weighed on the financial sector. But the brokers bucked the trend, and the XBD was the first index to rebound this morning.

Asian markets were lower overnight, as is the Yen, which is a slight positive. The 10-year yield is rising on the CPI data, sitting near 4.23%. But the positive s...
