Canadian Solar (CSIQ) shares are sharply higher this morning after Barclays Capital solar analyst Vishal Shah lifted his rating on the stock to Equal Weight from Underweight, boosting his price target to $16, from $11.50. The stock closed yesterday at $14.69.

“With potential dilution risk out of the way, we see more balance risk-reward,” due to strong near-term fundamentals, improving credit access for project financing and a “relatively attractive valuation.”

Canadian Solar Sells 6M Shrs At $15.75; 3% Discount

Canadian Solar (CSIQ) late yesterday said it priced an offering of 6 million common shares at $15.75, about a 3% discount to yesterday’s closing price of $16.26.

The company granted the underwriters an option to sell another 900,000 shares to cover over-allotments. Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank and Piper Jaffray are leading the offering, with Wells Faro as co-manager.

CSIQ said it will use the proceeds for general corporate purposes.

CSIQ today is down 49 cents, or 3%, to $15.77.

Canadian Solar Says Q3 Shipments Topped Guidance

Canadian Solar (CSIQ) this afternoon said it now sees Q3 shipments of 101 MW to 103 MW, ahead of previous guidance of 90 MW to 100 MW. The company also said it expects to report revenue for the quarter of $210 million to $215 million, ahead of the Street at $202.7 million. The company expects gross margin in the quarter of 16%-17%.

The company also said it now sees full year shipments of 295 MW to 305 MW, with shipments in Q4 of 127 MW to 137 MW. Previous guidance was for 260 MW to 270 MW for the year.

For years, Germany has been by the far the world’s largest solar market, thanks to an extremely lucrative feed-in-tariff program. But the cost of the program has become a political issue in Germany recently. Solar: China Feed-In-Tariff Could Be 2 Years Away

It could be two years or more before China adopts a national feed-in-tariff program, Hapoalim Securities analyst Gordon Johnson writes in a research note.
