Biotech no longer a safe haven: Elan (ELN) falls on hard times

Filed under: Pfizer (PFE), Newsletters, Merck and Co (MRK), Stocks to Sell It's been a tough year for many industries -- there's no denying it. Retailers of all stripes, oil companies, construction firms, financials, basic materials companies -- you name it, it's down.
So, are there any safe havens? Historically, in times of economic uncertainty the pharmaceutical industry, along with consumer staples, is often the "go to" place where, at a minimum, you can count on a nice dividend yield to shield your portfolio from gigantic losses. Not anymore. <>In this downturn even stalwarts such as Merck (>...

Filed under: Newsletters, Stocks to Buy "If you want to buy a great company dirt cheap, think Biogen Idec (NASDAQ: BIIB)," says biotech expert Michael Shulman. Here's an update from ChangeWave Biotech Investor. "Biogen recently got hammered on 'bad' news that wasn't actually so bad. BIIB and partner Elan (NYSE: ELN) reported that two MS patients, out of 31,800 currently receiving Tysabri, developed a rare brain malady called PML. <>"It's important to note, here, that the two companies had predicted that one in 1000 cases could develop PML and the FDA let the drug come to market with this unders>...

Biogen-Idec, Elan: Panic Selling Creates Interesting Opportunity

In July, Biogen-Idec (BIIB) and Elan (ELN), who co-market the multiple sclerosis drug Tysabri, announced two new cases of PML, a potentially deadly side effect. The stocks sold-off almost entirely. Biogen-Idec lost about 30% of its market share while Elan has lost over two thirds of its value.
I had previously recommended shares of Biogen-Idec right after the buyout rumors vanished and the stock was trading around 54. I had based that recommendation on the potential success of Tysabri.

Today's stock selection: ELN Elan žInspired by: Elan is way down and I'm buying http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/StrategyLab/Rn... I'm buying drug maker Elan ( ELN , news , msgs ) even though it is down more than 60% in the last three days. Here's why: Alzheimer's test results: Pass or fail? The first big drop came after the markets closed last Tuesday, when Elan detailed the results of its Phase 2 trial for bapineuzumab, a potential new drug for Alzheimer's disease. The company had previously announced that the Phase 2 trial did ...

Elan: Actionable Buy Call

Leerink Swann is out defending Elan (ELN) saying they are making no changes to their valuation of ELN shares and view any weakness today as a buying opportunity. The harsh sell off in the stock that could occur today will likely be fueled by overblown expectations for the Phase II data and the difficulty in presenting a cogent analysis of a complex trial in a complex disease in a 12-minute presentation.

Iam semi new to this whole stock market scene but since i was in 11th grade i have been watching Elan i own a nice amount of shares in the company and bought early in the 12's i always say to myself i should sell. Recently the stock climbed to the mid 22's Now its back in the 19's. Their drug Tysabri is a drug in which can be expected to generate more revenue then expense. In order for this company to soar over the other biotech stocks this drug must succeed. From the trials it has under gone so far it looks promising. BUY NOW before too late and do not let go until ur in the 30's.

Tysabri (to reduce the probability of MS recuringr) is continuing to increase in usage after being taken off the market due to safety issues (deaths) when used with Avonex or immunosuppressive drugs. This is a potential billion dollar drug. Elan shares revenue with Biogen IDEC. On the horizon is the start of phase III trials of an Altzheimer drug with Wyeth. This drug could change the shape of Wyeth and Elan. So far, the safety and effectiveness seems ok although phase II results are not all out. This could be a 10 Billion per year drug.
