Emerson Electric Co. (EMR) reported fourth-quarter earnings per share from continuing operations of 67 cents per share, higher than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 60 cents.
 
Sales for the fourth quarter ended September 30, 2009 of $5.3 billion, a decrease of 21% from the $6.7 billion for the same period last year. Underlying sales in the quarter declined 20%, which excludes a 2% unfavorable impact from currency exchange rates and a 1% positive impact from acquisitions. Gilbarco Veeder-Root, a wholly owned unit of Danaher Corporation (DHR), agreed to buy a petroleum dispensing pump (PDP) unit from Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in India. The PDP business unit manufactures, sells, integrates and services petroleum dispensers, LPG equipment, and automation systems solutions. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
 
This acquisition will further strengthen Gilbarco’s position in the fast growing Indian market. Emerson picks-up an energy efficient deal for $1.2 bln

Founded in the late 1800s, Emerson Electric (NYSE: EMR) is now an industrial giant. The company has a variety of units that deal with things like network power, industrial management, appliances and tools, and climate technologies. Last year, revenues hit $24.8 billion, with net income of $2.4 billion.

To bolster its position, Emerson is targeting acquisitions, which look especially attractive at current valuations. And, the latest deal came today: the $1.2 billion purchase of Avocent (NASDAQ: AVCT).
