<> Given the global economic slowdown, lower commodity prices, and cool-down in former red-hot grow markets such as China; the accompanying table presents statistics and an overview of a global transport short ETF strategy for passenger airlines, auto makers, maritime, and trucking companies. While I am still bullish on the prospects for railroads as a long investment idea and a hedge to these short transport ETF ideas, they will also suffer to some degree depending on the length and depth of the s>...

Are drybulk shippers capsizing?

Filed under: Industry, Columns, Stocks to Buy Editor's Note: This post was written by Fil Zucchi, one of Minyanville's many sharp minds.
Drybulk shippers have been slammed over the last few days courtesy of a plunge in capesize spot rates. However, according to the sharp eyes at Dahlman Rose, the volume of new spot fixtures has been exceedingly low of late. And taking a slightly longer perspective, spot rates are up more than 100% since last year.
A few things to keep in mind: <> <>Not all shippers are created equal: Dryships NASDAQ:DRYS) plays in almost strictly in the spot market and therefore>>...

<>Within the last two weeks, both TheStreet.Com and Motley Fool have come out with articles recommending the purchase of shipping stocks. The recent surge in the Baltic Dry Index is certainly an excellent reason. Since the low of this year, the BCI has surged from around $80,000 to $230,000+. The BPI has surged from around $40,000 to $80,000+. The BSI has surged from around $40,000 to $66,000+. The BCI has surpassed its 2007 high. The BPI and the BSI are nearing their 2007 highs. The shipping stocks are still significantly below their 2007 highs. The experts are predicting the Baltic Dry ind>...

Beam me up Scotti! Wouldn't it be nice to beam up a 100 million metric tons of coal, steel, wheat, copper or any other commodity from here to say China, or India, or Brazil? Well, technology is not there yet! The way this stuff is transported from producers to consumers overseas is mainly by huge ocean going vessels, marine tankers and they are busy these days carrying over huge amounts of every commodity to countries where demand is outstripping supply as every day goes by.

I bought EXM on March 20 for $26.26. It's gained dramatically over the past month: 43.16%! I like the fundamentals and technicals are still looking good, if not a big extended. I'll be watching 200 EMA closely. If we can bust through, establishing a new line of support, that would be ideal. If we fall back to 50 EMA I plan to add to this position.

With a 20% runup today, there's great temptation to sell on the news ("yes" vote on the merger with QMAR). But I'm holding EXM. Take a look at this slideshow. <>EXM will become the world's largest drybulk shipper, with 47 ships compared to Navios' 38 and Dryships' 36.EXM has 8 newbuilds which will be delivered between 2008-2010. All are capesize (largest size with the highest rates). EXM has a 100% interest in 1, a 42.8% interest in another, and a 50% interest in the remaining 6.<>Fixed charter rates will decline from 78% in 2008, to 57% in 2009, to 46% in 2010. Excel Maritime Carriers Ltd. (EXM) announced that it completed its acquisition of Quintana Maritime Limited (QMAR). The merger creates a combined company that operates a fleet of 47 vessels with a total carrying capacity of approximately 3.7 million DWT and an average age of approximately 8 years. The combined company will be one of the largest dry bulk shipping companies in the industry and will operate the largest dry bulk fleet by DWT of any shipping company listed in the U.S. EXM is up 21.43%. I'm holding, as I think the $50'ish range is possible this year.
I'm also watching DRYS, which ...
