<> AMAG Pharma (AMAG) more than doubled on word that the FDA accepted its complete response for a NDA of iron-deficiency anemia drug ferumoxytol in patients with chronic kidney disease and will issue a final ruling before year-end. The news is a major relief for AMAG as no new clinical trials were required and the quick decision deadline before year-end is encouraging for the approval prospects of ferumoxytol. A trio of companies expect FDA decisions for abuse-resistant pain drugs before year-end, including Pain The>...

<> The accompanying table presents a 20-stock defensive growth portfolio which I believe will outperform the overall market as measured by the S&P 500 Index as the current panic trade comes to an end and investors stop selling stocks regardless of their fundamentals. The average PEG ratio for this group of stocks is below one and the average dividend yield of 4.4% is nearly two times the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) yield of 2.4%. All of the stocks have a market cap over $1B with an average of just under $75B and the indust>...

FCX is a good example of a value play (trading at less than 5X forward earnings) resulting from the broad-based sell-off in commodities and forced hedge fund liquidation. Now trading in mid-$40's, which puts it at a 3-year low and dividend yield of just below 4%.

I see a lot of extended charts out there as we move into what seems like day 82 of consecutive upside, along with some bond fide breakouts. While we should only be so lucky to catch another Potash (POT), one chart that caught my eye last night was Freeport McMoran Copper & Gold (FCX). Much like Potash had key resistance at $106, FCX has some at $85... which it sneaked a peak over in the closing moments of the day yesterday. All it will take is some hammering of the US peso and off to the races she *might go*.
Her Peruvian brother in arms, Southern Peru Copper (PCU) is in a similar set u...

JDS Uniphase Gets a Boost From the Cramer Effect
<>JDS Uniphase (JDSU) is having a terrific morning on Thursday as it has gained nearly 11%. When a stock breaks out like this, we always look for a catalyst for the move and in this case the primary reason seems to us to be an endorsement from Jim Cramer. We often cover Cramer’s Mad Money show on our blog because of this reason; he moves stocks, specifically stocks that he spends a fair amount of time on. There are small examples of the “Cramer Effect” all the time, but a recent example was when he discussed a bullish thesis on mining stock Freeport McMoran (FCX) and in the absence>...
