This article is a reprint of my February 13, 2008 RealMoney column. Late last year I used the government’s PPI data by industry to scout out 26 investment ideas , among which were industrial valve manufacturers Flowserve (FLS), Crane (CR) and Curtiss-Wright ( CW - Annual Report ). In October, I said Flowserve may be the best way to play the PPI report . <> Since that column in October, Flowserve has gained more than 22.5%, while the S&P lost nearly 12%. Now the question is whether to let this winner ride or to take the money and run. For now, I think the answer>...

Fluor (FLR) - Solid as Usual
I have not had a chance to do a write up on Flowserve's (FLS) earnings yet, but Fluor (FLR) in engineering / construction and Flowserve in water services are 2 dominant machines. [Feb 26, 2009: Fluor and Flowserve Continue Best of Breed Ways] Fluor is trading at 14x this year's estimate but at this point 2010 is looking to be less profitable than 2009; we shall see how it plays out. Fluor reported last night - a slight beat on the bottom line and inline on the top line. Inline on guidance - as always the key with these E&C names is backlog; things seem to be holding up well there too. <><>N>>...

WSJ: Mutual Fund Manager Donald Hodges Sees Decade Ruined - Hodges Fund (HDPMX)
Don Hodges is a mutual fund manager who I've been following with one eye for quite a few years - he runs Hodges Fund (HDPMX) ; we are similar in the "go anywhere" approach, and a quite concentrated portfolios - for his fund there are currently about 50 positions with a high asset concentration in the top 10 positions: >40%. I respect that approach rather than "being the market" (buying 200+ stocks and not being concentrated in anything) as most mutual funds are. Like most long only managers Mr. Hodges has had a very rough year in 2008 (-50%), and 2009 thus far has not been to kind either...

Flowserve (FLS) and Fluor (FLR) Continue Best of Breed Ways
We remain in a market where fundamentals seem to matter very little, and student body trading ("everyone in!" everyone out!") is dominant, but Fluor (FLR) and Flowserve (FLS) continue to be impressive in their respective niches.
First, Fluor (FLR) the largest "global infrastructure/engineering" firm out there - unlike a lot of peers who have been decimated on earnings of late (Foster Wheeler, Chicago Bridge & Iron) Fluor seems to be outperforming - although their business is not immune; their largest segment is "Oil & Gas". We deemed Fluor to be one of the premium franchises the last time w...
