Filed under: Stocks to Buy As the name suggests, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (NASDAQ: GMCR) is based in the pastoral state of Vermont. The company offers about 180 varieties of coffee, cocoa, and tea, which it sells to wholesale customers including supermarkets, convenience stores, resorts, and office delivery services.
Some of its biggest customers are ExxonMobil's convenience stores and McDonald's restaurants. In September, Green Mountain acquired Tully's Coffee, which has been chipping away at Starbucks' dominance in the Pacific Northwest. <><>Continue reading <>Coffee stock #3: Green Mountain>>>...

This one is interesting because it came up through my screening as the one that got away from me. I missed the impressive run up and boy is it impressive. Up over 300% since the "March 9" lows of the market, this stock keeps resurfacing. Today I heard an analyst recommend shorting it and I thought duhhh...I am solidifying this play because the CEO dumped millions of shares for a healthy profit. Many others should and we will join them in shorting this one.

Green Mountain moved up from 88th on Forbes "200 Best Small Companies in America" list in 2007 to 55th in 2008. This company is moving forward with inovating the way we drink coffee with it's Keurig Single-Cup Brewer and there's a lot of potential for growth there with single pot brewing currently in only 5% of U.S. households. Green Mountain is also focusing on global initiatives to enhance agricultural productivity as well.

Green Mountain's recent stock price tapering off, despite steady earnings estimates could suggest GMCR is currently undervalued at $32 per share. The recent decline in stock price over the past 5 days was done on low volume, indicating that the market is anxiously awaiting the earnings announcement on May 1. If they beat the estimate, GMCR will seriously rally. GMCR is fundamentally sound with attractive levels of debt and rising EPS quarter-to-quarter, and so I think they will do well come May 1, 2008.

Are we back in the 1999 era when stocks spike higher on stock split announcements? Green Mountain Coffee (GMCR) started moving higher last week, but then exploded after the company announced that it was effecting a 3-for-1 stock split. Do investors realize that stock splits don't add any real value? Regardless, the stock has gone parabolic, and is now overbought and extended. I have taken a small short position on the stock, as I think it could retrace some of this recent runup. But the float is small, and the stock seems to being bought with reckless abando...
