Shares of Harmonic (HLIT), which provides video-on-demand hardware to the cable industry and other TV system operators, are down sharply in late trading on a weak Q4 outlook. For Q3, the company posted revenue of $83.9 milliom and non-GAAP profits of 5 cents a share; the Street had expected $83.8 million and 6 cents. That wasn’t good, but the outlook is worse. Jefferies communications equipment analyst George Notter made a pair of stock calls today in the cable equipment sector that have triggered big price moves. <><>BigBand Networks (BBND): Notter raised his rating on the stock to Hold from Underperform, while maintaining a price target fo $5.50. Given weakness in the stock over the last 2-3 weeks, he writes, risk/reward has become more balanced. Harmonic Tumbles As Q1 Misses, Q2 Outlook Fall Short

Harmonic (HLIT) shares are getting clobbered in late trading, after the provider of hardware used for video on-demand systems posted disappointing Q1 results. For the quarter, the company reported revenue of $67.8 million, down from $87.3 million a year ago, and well below the Street at $75.2 million. Non-GAAP profits of four cents a share missed by a penny.
