has formed a large base to launch upward from... poked up above resistance and pulled back under $36. now it either accelerates to upside or I go away. many cell phone makers paying IDCC royalties so while earnings results to be announced on Nov 1st. results matter less than usual b/c business model is in acceleration mode and the story is not about this quarters results.

InterDigital Shrs Jump On Strong Q3

InterDigital (IDCC) shares are sharply higher today after the company late yesterday posted better-than-expected Q3 profits.

For the quarter, the telecom IP licensing company reported revenue of $75.5 million and profits of 69 cents a share, ahead of the Street at $75 million and 58 cents.

CFO Scott McQuilkin said in a statement that the company remains “optimistic about the fundamental growth prospects for the 3G handset market, which bodes well for our business model.” He adds that “global economic conditions appear to have stabilized.”

Short Interest Rises as Nokia Battles Interdigital, Apple

Nokia announced losses last week. This sector is attracting a lot of attention - Nokia has been unsuccessfully challenged by Interdigital (IDCC) over patent infringement; and Nokia (NOK) in turn is mounting a legal IP challenge to Apple (AAPL). Market interest has also been sparked by the new Google (GOOG) Android phone. The short base in Nokia stands at 3.8%, up from 2.5% a week ago. InterDigital Loses ITC Case Vs. Nokia; Stock Falls

InterDigital (IDCC) shares are trading lower this morning on new that the International Trade Commission on Friday ruled against the company in a patent infringement case against Nokia (NOK). The company said that the administrative law judge hearing the case found that InterDigital’s patents were valid, but that they were not infringed by Nokia’s 3G products.

InterDigital said in a statement late Friday that it “strongly” disagrees with the ITC finding, and that it is “considering a number of options” in response.

IDCC this morning is down $2.68, or 11%, to $21.76.
