Discovery Labs: The Next Biotech Winner?

<> I think the recent decline in Discovery Labs (DSCO) since the Company announced a minor delay in submitting a complete response to the FDA for an approvable ruling on Surfaxin represents a buying opportunity and bought some shares on Friday at $1.74 per share. Insider buying over the past two months (including a 75,000 share buy from the CEO at $1.87) demonstrates management's confidence in already meeting the FDA's requirements and the plan to submit a complete response to FDA for Surfaxin, which should now occur by about the third >...

ImClone Set to Sell at a Premium to Mystery Bidder

ImClone Systems (IMCL) is set to sell itself for $6.1B or about $70 per share to the mystery big pharma bidder that Chairman Carl Icahn introduced as a defense against Bristol-Myers (BMY) original offer of $60, which was recently upped to $62 per share for the remaining 83% stake it does not already own. I have written about the saga on my blog since the end of July when Bristol-Myers made the original offer, but the Wall Street Journal s reporting the most likely bidders are Pfizer (PFE) or Eli Lilly (LLY). Both of these big pharmas are in need of a pipeline and have the cash to...

Bristol-Myers Ups Bid to $62 for ImClone

<> Last night, Bristol-Myers (BMY) announced plans to increase its bid for the remaining 83% of ImClone Systems (IMCL) it does not already own to $62 per share and plans to take the offer directly to shareholders in the form of a tender offer. ImClone and Chairman Carl Icahn rejected a $60 per share cash bid from Bristol-Myers at the end of July and stated that a mystery big pharma bidder had emerged at $70 per share, as I last wrote about here . Besides Bristol-Myers 17% stake in ImClone, the two companies are marketing pa>...

There isn't much novel here. Using antibodies to cure cancer may sound good but there could be adverse side effects from using antibodies. Also, their generally poor uptake requires a lot of material and many animals to produce these antibodies. Their margins look good but their PEG is 2.9 and P/E is 35. This doesn't look like a growth stock to me. On the plus size an 11% inside ownership shows the company isn't going to loose track of their finances.

Financial Felons: Martha Stewart
Filed under: Law, ImClone Systems (IMCL), Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSO) This post is part of a feature in which we wonder whatever happened to some notorious financial felons. See all 17. <>I sometimes get the impression that people think I'm joking when I say I love Martha Stewart. I get it; I don't look like I have much in common with Martha. My apartment is cluttered, my cleaning habits are slapdash at best, and my hair is generally unkempt. I have at least a week's worth of random garbage traveling with me in the Hyundai at all times -- and I often get the distinct impression that p>...

Healthcare ETFs Outpace the Market

<>The accompanying table presents an analysis and statistics for the 28 healthcare ETFs listed at the Yahoo! Finance ETF Center. As a group, the healthcare ETFs outpaced the overall market in the past year by more than 10%, posting an average loss of 26.5% compared to a loss of 37.4% for the S&P 500 SPDR ETF (SPY). The best performing healthcare ETF was the Biotech HOLDRs (BBH), thanks to a buyout bid for top holding Genetech (DNA) and solid earnings results this year for the number two position, Amgen (AMGN).
The top three holdings (DNA, AMGN, GILD) account for over 80% of BBH, reinforcing th>...

Who's Next in the Biotech Buyout Frenzy?
|
|
|
The biotech industry is rapidly consolidating as big pharma companies put their cash stash to use in deals ranging from well-known large caps all the way down to unknown micro-caps in an effort to bolster their range of marketed products, late stage pipeline candidates, and drug discovery technology platforms.
Genentech (DNA) has rejected Roche's (RHHBY) $89 bid to acquire the remaining 44% of DNA it does not already own as insufficient. I think DNA could easily get $100 per share based on Eli Lilly's (LLY) $70 buyout of ImClone Systems (IMCL), which trumped Erbitux marketing partner Bristol...
