This math is probably not right, but at least you'll be able to follow it. as of Sep 2008 quarter-end, ING had roughly 23.7 bn (euros) in equity value on the balance sheet (book value). Of this amount (using Google Finance as reference), 7.5 bn of this amount was intangible, making tangible equity 16.2 bn. October 17, 2008: ING pre-releases information concerning it's Q3 2008. Just jumped hoops with BofA on the Monday open as the market found itself eager and rumbling on. Top Ten Global Insurance Companies

In this post lets take a quick look at The Top 10 Global Insurance Companies by 2008 revenues.

On October 27th, ING (ING) one of the world’s largest insurance companies, was forced to split itself into two in order to comply with the strict rules enforced by the EU on firms that received government financial aid during the credit crisis last year. ING plans to divest its US online baning operation ING Direct, insurance business and about 6% of the retail banking in domestic market. ING ranks 6th in the world based on its insurance revenues and 13th among European banks as of June this year.

ING gets dinged

Like many other global financial institutions, ING Groep NV (NYSE: ING) got emergency government funding a year ago -- to stave off the financial chaos. The loan amounted to about 10 billion euros.

But, according to the European Union, it appears that the assistance was a bit too generous. As a result, the powerful organization has pressured ING to start to pay back the loans.

AMP Short Base Drops

AMP, the wealth management company announced earnings Wednesday. The short base is currently 0.8%, below that of Old Mutual, ING Group (ING) and Wuestenrot & Wuerttemberg. They currently stand at 2.5%, 1.1% and 0.1% respectively. All except ING have seen their short base decline over the last month, with Wuestenrot & Wuerttemberg falling 27%.

Shorts on Aegon Up Over 100% Since June

The short base (as measured by Percent Shares Outstanding On Loan) for Aegon Nv (AEG) has increased 98% over the past 3 months and now stands at 1.8%. This is up over 100% from the 52 week low hit on June 25, 2009.

When compared to other life insurance companies, the short base is in line with Ing Groep Nv (ING) 0.9%, Prudential Plc (PUK) 1.9 and Principal Financial Group Inc. (PFG) 1.6%. However this is below Sun Life Financial Inc which currently stands at 3%.
