JWN: Bull or Bear?
WHY YOU SHOULD SHORT THE RETAILERS

<> I am recommending the sell of the retailing sector. Why? The reason is simple, no one is buying anything right now. When was the last time you heard of a friend, neighbor, or colleague bought a new car? I tell you that it is obvious all over America (if not the world) put discretionary spending on perma hold a couple of weeks ago. You can rest assured that there isn't a retailer in America (even Walmart) that will have a great quarter. <> Ever since Bush went on prime time consequences..... the retail market has come to a screeching halt that is only slightly less frozen than the cr>>...

Retailers Leading the Way? Not Really.

For months now, investors have been looking to the retail sector for insights on the US economy. After all, 70% of US GDP comes from consumer spending. So the retail sector is often thought of as a bellwether for the US economy as a whole. Things aren’t looking good, though retailers have been doing their best to mask this. Take the April same-store sales numbers, for instance. That month, same-store sales declined for most major retailers. However, instead of admitting that things were slowing down, they blamed an early Easter and rainy weather for their poor results.

While we think JWN is one of the better ways to invest in retail, its stock is likely to be range bound for the next few quarters.

5/16 - "Nordstrom (JWN) reported first quarter earnings per share of $0.54, which matched our estimate, but was $0.05 ahead of consensus estimates. The upside was due to better-than-expected expense controls and share repurchases. Even so, the company issued guidance that was below its previous outlook."
"While we think JWN is one of the better ways to invest in retail, its stock is likely to be range bound for the next few quarters. As a result, we maintain our Hold rating and $39 target price, which is 14x our fiscal year 2008 EPS estimate...we think the stock will trade in-line with the...

You should not get oil ramping and retail ramping. You can't have early-cycle running and commodities running, even though I know that commodities are a "rest of world" story.
I believe that Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) (Cramer's Take) can run, but the others? I have to say that if oil isn't going down, these sto...

<> JWN posted Q4 results of $0.89 vs. $0.69 last year, a 29% YoY increase in EPS, thanks to a strong holiday quarter and a strong year. For JWN, the women’s apparel division put the pedal to the medal alongside JWN's designer strategy kept paying off. While results were a penny lower than consensus, on careful inspection I found the reason being additional bonus accrual due to stellar 06 performance as well as a 50% appreciation in stock price over the past 52-weeks. <>With the stock down 5%+ after hours, The Street viewed guidance for 07 as dis>>...

Nordstrom (JWN) reported a 9% increase in same store sales above the expected 4.3% estimate. I would take profits in JWN and sell on the good news. The trade is over in my opinion.
