Coal is another commodity that has been on fire of late. In fact, Market Vectors Coal ETF (KOL) has more than doubled off its March low to sit at a 2009 high. But it hasn't been due to rising coal prices. Domestic coal producers put in a solid quarter of earnings reports, underscoring their intrinsic strength. And overseas demand, especially from China, has been strong.

A number of coal stocks have fallen out of favor as the
price of coal has dramatically fallen over the past three weeks. There was an
initial spike down in coal at the beginning of July with a small rally. Now the
chart for coal has broken below resistance and is due for a further decline.

"We’re continuing to emphasize conventional energy, solar, shipping, agriculture, and commodities," says Harry Domash, who adds, "But one industry we’ve overlooked so far is coal."
In his Winning Investing, he explains, "This month, we’re adding two coal industry picks. One, a short-term play to capture the action in hot coal mining stocks, and the other, a long-term dividend-paying investment." <>"We’ve avoided coal primarily because environmentally speaking, coal is bad news. Coal is mostly used to generate electricity and to power steel plants. Crude oil prices are so high because supp><>><><>><>>><>><>><>><>><>><><>><>>><>><>< />><>>< />...

Got this after reading the following article.. http://biz.yahoo.com/ibd/080520/etf.html?.v=1 Surging demand from countries like india and china largescale plans in europe should continue to push prices higher in the coming years. The low cost of extraction per tonne continues to make coal an attractive source of energy.

"Profits from coal may be even bigger than from gold, which is viewed as coal's more glamorous and higher profile rival," notes Nick Vardy.
In his Global Bull Market Alert he explains, "The Market Vectors Coal ETF (NYSE: KOL) enables you to buy a basket of 39 coal-related companies from 12 different countries." Here's his overview of the exchange-traded fund. "Despite its status as the most 'environmentally incorrect' source of energy, coal provides 25% of the world's energy and generates about half of the electricity in every state in the United States, except California. <>"Coal plays a key >...

I got this idea after reading this article in the New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/23/world/europe/23coal.html?hp... from the article Over the next five years, Italy will increase its reliance on coal to 33 percent from 14 percent. Power generated by Enel from coal will rise to 50 percent. <> And Italy is not alone in its return to coal. Driven by rising demand, record high oil and natural gas prices, concerns over energy security and an aversion to nuclear energy, European countries are expected to put into operation about 50 coal-fired plants over the ne>...

KOL is a coal ETF. This ETF is not just about Big Coal like Arch and Peabody though. It also includes mining equipment makers like Bucyrus and Joy Global. There is far too much coal in the United States and their lobby has too much political power to have this source written off. Also, don't forget about China. China is burning coal like nobody's business.
