Motorola Wins Major European Infrastructure Contract
<>Recently, Motorola Inc (MOT) was awarded a contract to supply EuroDOCSIS 3.0 digital video modems to UPC Broadband for its pan-European network. UPC Broadband is the European division of Liberty Global Inc (LBTYA), the largest cable TV operator in Europe.

Using Motorola’s SBV6120E EuroDOCSIS 3.0 voice and data solution, UPC will deliver high-speed (120 Mbps) data and IP voice and services to its customers in The Netherlands, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Switzerland.     DirecTV Throws TiVo A Lifeline

    tivo-box.jpgDirecTV (DTV) was once TiVo's (TIVO) most important business partner and greatest source of subscribers. That all ended in 2005 when DirecTV said it would stop marketing TiVo in favor of set-tops made by NDS, a unit of News Corp. (NWS) which then had a controling stake in the satellite TV company.

    But now DirecTV is controlled by Liberty Media (LBTYA), and the company is going back into business with TiVo in a bigger way: the company will market and distribute a TiVo-enabled HD DVR to its 16 million subscribers starting in 2009.

    Liberty Finally Pulls Plug On Movie Service Vongo

    ratatouille-itunes.jpgLiberty Media's (LBTYA) Starz Entertainment is dropping the curtain on its Web movie service Vongo. It stopped accepting new subscribers on August 1, according to its Web site, and will end service for existing subscribers on September 30. No surprise here: Starz said Vongo wouldn't be long for this world back in May, when it launched Starz Play, a white-label version of the service through Verizon (VZ), and presumably other broadband providers if it can get the deals done.

    Liberty Abandons Internet Movie Service Vongo

    ratatouille-itunes.jpgLiberty Media's (LBTYA) Starz Entertainment is putting its Internet movie service, Vongo, out to pasture. That's what the NY Times' Saul Hansel correctly deduced after Starz announced today it had cut a deal with Verizon for a new, cheaper broadband movie service, Starz Play.
