Legg Mason: Quintessential Bear Market Value Play

Often during a bear market quality companies can be bought for fractions of their intrinsic value, and one of the clearer examples of this in the current market panic is Legg Mason (LM). Legg Mason is a diversified asset manager with substantial assets under management in equities, bonds, money markets, and fund of funds. Contrary to public perception they are not overly reliant on any one fund or manager but instead they have a broad array of managers and asset classes to offer investors in their funds and separate accounts. <>At the close of trading on July 28, 2008 LM had the following stat>...

Legg Mason, Inc (LM) is set to report earnings before the market opens on Friday, July 25th. Legg Mason is a global asset manager with $950 billion in assets under managements and serves the institutional, mutual fund and wealth management markets. LM is expected to earn 13 cents per share for its ist quarter. We expect Legg to announce earnings that will miss investors’ and analysts’ expectations. We think that it is likely that during the conference call management could lower the company’s profit outlook going forward. <>Analysts’ estimates have been coming down for t<><>>>><><>>><><>>>...

Legg Mason is one of the leading asset management companies. Its fund manager is the legendary Bill Miller who had beaten the markets for 15 years straight. Why short? 1.stocks Bill Miller is very bullish on the economy and had loaded up on financials like C,JPM,ML,FNM,COF,AIG.His top holding also include Aetna,UNH,Sears,Amazon,EBay all of which I am bearish on. http://quicktake.morningstar.com/fundnet/Holdings.aspx?Countr... Another way of looking at it is the fund has 20% + representation for financials and consumer services. Both of them are going to be destroyed.A m...

I came across this great article on LM's earnings miss today. Here's a teaser:
<>Today was Mark Fetting’s first earnings call as CEO of Legg Mason. He was presiding over its first quarterly loss since the company went public in 1983. Losses are pretty rare for asset management companies.<>Fetting seemed a bit nervous. In his opening remarks, he used the term “focused” nine times in describing how to deal with Legg’s many problems. The underperforming investment teams are “focused.” The U.S. distribution teams remain “focused.” Bruce Sherman and Greg Powers, two of Legg’s worst performing manag<><>>>><>>><><><><>>>>>...

I am a simple man and like most simple men I live next door to uneducated liberal dickheads that know the answer to everything and because they are feely people they have the RIGHT to act on what they know. It is not hard to compare LM's assets under management vs. peers and eventual earnings and PE ratios and recognize some serious differences in valuation. Here's Leggs problem. Their assets they bought from Citigroup have had redemption problems. Legg recently was hit because Miller's Value fund didn't do well during the recent credit crunch and perceptually, since they were already having redemptions and Miller is so visible, the stock got hit again. Let's separate some stuff for a second. LM equity AUM is over $300 B. Miller's Value Trust is about $19 (from memory). The problem i< />< />...

Nuveen Takeover-Think aBout Legg and Federated

Nuveen Investments ( JNC ) announced this morning that it was being taken over by Madison Dearborn for $65 per share. JNC has assets under management (AUM) of about $165 billion roughly half of which is equities. The takeout valuation is 16 times trailing EBITDA and about 3.4% of AUM. I think other asset management companies look starkly cheap in the light of this transaction. Readers are aware of our positive views on Legg Mason ( LM ) It is trading at only 11 times TTM EBITDA and about 1.4% of AUM. Janus Capital ( JNS ) though frequently rumored as a potential t...
