LG Display (LPL) shares are up sharply today following a highly bullish note this morning from Morgan Stanley’s Keon Han, who assumed coverage of the LCD panel maker with an Overweight rating and a target price of 37,000 Korean won, or about 119% above yesterday’s closing level in trading in Seoul.

Corning (GLW) this morning said it now sees Q3 profits before special items of 43-45 cents a share, down from previous guidance of 48-51 cents. Sales are now expected to be $1.58 billion to $1.62 billion, down from $1.65 billion to $1.72 billion. The company also dropped its gross margin expectation for the quarter to about 47% from “at least 50%.”

In a statement, Corning said the reduced guidance reflects lower-than-expected shipments of LCD glass in the company’s wholly owned display business.

LG Display (LPL) today said it will keep its LCD panel output at 90% of normal as screen prices remain weak amid sluggish demand for flat-screen TVs and personal computers, Reuters reports.

LG Display had cut its production by 10% in late July, and initially planned to resume full production in September. The company is the world’s second-largest maker of LCD screens. A spokesman for the company said that the company will monitor conditions to decide when to resume full production, but that the environment is weaker than the company had expected.
