The Microchip (MCHP)/ON Semi (ONNN) joint bid for Atmel (ATML) is providing one of the few rays of light on an otherwise gloomy day for the Street. But while the $5-a-share cash bid is a substantial premium to the $3.28 share price at yesterday’s close, it likely is not going to be enough to win the support of Atmel’s board.

Collateral Damage: ON Semi’s Slide Drags Down CATS

Today’s slide in shares of ON Semiconductor (ONNN), which reflects investor concerns about the company’s role in a joint bid with Microchip (MCHP) for Atmel (ATML), is dragging down shares of Catalyst Semiconductor (CATS). And the reason is pretty clear: CATS previously had agreed to be acquired by ONNN in an all-stock deal.

ON, Microchip Jointly Offer $5/Shr To Buy Atmel; Shares Of Both Suitors Tumble; Atmel Set To Soar

Microchip (MCHP) and ON Semiconductor (ONNN) today made a joint unsolicited bid to acquire Atmel (ATML) for $5 a share in cash. The deal values Atmel at $2.3 billion.

In a letter to Atmel yesterday - which was released today by Microchip and ON Semi - the two companies says there were “deeply disappointed” that Atmel’s board “appears unwilling to consider a transaction at this time under any circumstances.”

Another industry in transformation?
It is well publicized that the financial industry is undergoing cataclysmic changes in terms of survival of companies, industry leadership, etc. Is there is another industry that is undergoing a similar transformation?
