Mosaic leads the fertilizer field{in a good way}.  Just a good combination of companies and timing seems right for them to take off.  Potash and Agrium and a few others will do very well also with 2010 numbers improving with the inflation I feel coming.

As with gold 6 weeks ago, as with oil 2 days ago, now comes the liquidity chasing one of the few laggard areas... agriculture. Potash (POT) is breaking out in almost identical fashion to the other 2 commodities mentioned.

Last Thursday we saw a story that potash inventories declined for a 3rd consecutive month, although still at 142% above the 5 year average. Agriculture is one of my favorite "long term" themes as a crowded planet modernizes - but the recession has certainly hit the names in the sector more than I thought; I thought these would be a bit more recession proof. Mosaic No Guidance But Positive Executive Comments
Mosaic (MOS) reported its Q1 numbers and really stuck its neck out with this comment hidden in its press release.

“Mosaic is not providing financial guidance on potash sales volumes or MOP selling price until market conditions normalize.”

All this in the context of a revenue drop from approximately $4.3 to $1.5 Billion. Mosaic is in a commodities business. Implicitly to operate you must have a view on prices.

Yet they feel comfortable with this quote "Phosphate fundamentals have improved. The potash market is evolving and we expect strong demand in calendar year 2010 for both nutrients," ...

Options Update: Monsanto October volatility at 43 into EPS and outlook

Monsanto (NYSE: MON) closed at $74.85. MON is expected to report Q4 EPS on October 7. On September 11 MON provided FY2009 EPS guidance at the low end of its $4.40-$4.50 view. MON October option implied volatility is at 44; November is at 36, versus its six-month average of 40, according to Track Data.

Mosaic (NYSE: MOS) closed at $45.96. MOS is scheduled to report Q1 EPS today. MOS October option implied volatility is at 67, November is at 54; verses its six-month average of 62, according to Track Data.
