In the Tech 07 conference, MSCC's management stated that business remains robust and enjoys strong business trends across the board. From commercial aerospace, satellite to defense, all witnessing solid demand. In commercial air, which is 20% of MSCC's sales, there is Boeing's commercial aircraft backlog, which is growing solidly, from 440 07 to 515 aircrafts in 08, up 17%.

I like MSCC given its solid growth prospects in defense equipment, medical devices, and LCD TVs, and also its diversified revenue streams, its pricing benefits from military customers, and its stability dynamics.

Microsemi Shutting Scottsdale Plant

Microsemi (MSCC) today said it will shut its manufacturing plant in Scottsdale, Arizona, by April 2011. The chip company said it move is part of an effort to reduce costs. The shutdown should boost operating income by $20 million to $25 million a year, the company said.

MSCC said it will take one-time charges of $24 million to $26 million for severance and related costs.

The company did not say how many people would be affected by the closure.

FBR: Risk of PC Chip Overbuild; AMD Cut to “Market Perform”

Although inventory of chips in the PC supply chain is still “lean,” there’s a risk that companies have overbuilt a tad in the third quarter, writes Friedman, Billings, Ramsey analyst Craig Berger in a note to clients today, after a trip to Asia talking with companies in that supply chain.

Partly as a result, Berger cut Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to “Market Perform” from “Outperform.”

Microsemi Shares Swoon On Barclays Downgrade

Microsemi (MSCC) shares are down sharply this morning after Barclays Capital analyst Romit Shah cut his rating on the shares to Equal Weight from Overweight, while trimming his price target to $12, from $10.
