Avid Up 10% on JP Morgan Upgrade

Hot on the heels of JP Morgan’s (JPM) technology, media and telecom conference in Boston last week, analyst Paul Coster this morning upgraded shares of beleaguered video post-prodution technology vendor Avid (AVID) to “Overweight” from “Underweight,” on the belief that cable companies and many broadcast television networks will speed up their switch to hi-def programming next year, and Avid’s wares will be needed for the switch.

His price target goes to $17 from a prior $11.

Macrovision Changes Its Name To Rovi

Macrovision (MVSN) this morning said it intends to change its name to Rovi. The change requires holder approval. The company expects it will also eventually change its stock symbol.

The company said that through a series of strategic acquisitions and divestitures, it is dramatically different than it was just a year ago. Macrovision provides interactive programming guides, copy protection software,  and metadata on music, games, movies and television programming.

  • After falling over 4% yesterday, stocks were up at the open this morning.
  • The Commerce Department reported the trade deficit in December fell 4 percent to $39.9 billion, from $41.6 billion in November. It was slightly higher than the $36 billion deficit economists expected. For the year, the deficit shrank by 3.3 percent to $677.1 billion. It was the second straight annual decline after five straight years of record deficits.

    Macrovision Q4 Revs Top Street; Repeats ‘09 View

    <>Macrovision Solutions (MVSN) this afternoon reported Q4 revenues of $118.2 million, ahead of the Street consensus of $111.1 million. The company posted a GAAP loss for the quarter of $209.9 million, or $2.06 a share; that includes a loss from discontinued operations of $219.1 million.
