The 2009 clock is ticking loudly. The year has started off with a lot of continued turbulence. We have a new president, Barack Obama, who will boldly lead us where no man has gone before -- two trillion further in debt, most likely.

Anybody have capital gains to show this year? I didn't think so. Not unless you were shorting the market, and in particular financials. I got clobbered with everyone else. There were not many places to hide. Picking winners was like guessing where each piece of debris would land after the tornado moved through town.

"Annaly Capital (NYSE: NLY) is in the sweet spot," says Steve Sjuggerud in Daily Wealth. He says, "It borrows money at a low interest rate and invests it at a higher rate -- and earns the 'spread'."

"The cost of money is historically low, and it's headed lower. Meanwhile, relative to the cost of money, the return on money is higher than it's ever been.

"The ultimate way trade on this historic discrepancy, for high-returns with very low risk, is through shares of companies like Annaly, which is now s now paying a 16% dividend.

With increased refinances through all of 2008, NLY will continue to increase its mortgages.  These aren't subprime loans, they're guaranteed by Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, which is ultimately guaranteed by the US gov't, for a formidably strong dividend and capital appreciation from EPS growth.  It's as nice as an FDIC savings account, although with a stronger dividend interest. 

Great hold, great buy on any pull backs.  A best of breed.

This is a short term interest - dividend play that appears to have moderate credit risk and should continue to increase in value until the Fed starts increasing interest rates.  Once the FED starts increasing interest rates this investment should be sold ASAP and put on watch list so when interest rates are lowered by FED in the next cycle you can consider investing again.  You could also short this or buy put options if FED increases interest rates very fast in next FED interest rate increase cycle.
