1. Southwest now stealing vital high-margin route--> Minneapolis to Chicago. More of that is possible now that slots are opening up at major airports (such as Minneapolis). 2. Airlines not a great business to be in the next 2 years due to commodity price risk and weakening consumer. 3. Mergers: Tough to execute in ANY economy, but even tougher when jobs are a premium asset to families. 4. The US needs low-cost airlines, not high-ticket ones. What's Northwest's demise, is the US consumer's gain.
