Too unique, actually, and that is a problem for the newspaper business. Yesterday, we learned that the old Tribune Company, privately owned by billionaire Sam Zell, is filing for protection under bankruptcy law. The company is drowning in a sea of debt and trying frantically to sell assets in order to raise cash. <>It is obvious to manag>...

Maybe newspapers don't work as businesses. The shocking 10% workforce reduction announced this week by McClatchy (Cramer's Take) (NYSE: MNI), formerly the best-run chain out there, is a reminder that all of these companies have borrowed too much money and don't generate the cash flow to make it work. McClatchy, with an 8%...

The NY Times could very well be past its time. This dinosaur of old media content is now finally realizing its paper or other options. This is a tough stock to swallow because their must definitely be a catalyst to turn this giant around. The positives are its been done at the Wall Street Journal with Rupert Murdoch, the company finally realizes an increased need for an internet presence, and the family owned company may be ready to move on. Changes will be needed such as a possible sale (maybe to Rupert), acquisitions to grow the company for the future, or finally changing the ownership ...

The digital age has not been kind to the newspaper
industry. Not too long ago owning a newspaper was a lucrative
enterprise synonymous with large circulation numbers, huge profit
margins, and historically high stock prices.<!--more-->The newspaper industry,
the second oldest mass media enterprise in the United States with more
than 3 centuries of existence, had no outside competition because its
structure was practically a monopoly and its core business highly
localized. <> This was before the newspaper business model was mercilesslydismantled by the web and its three-headed monster: Craigsli>...

This is a high-risk idea. I am generally not inclined to buy stocks in downtrends or try to call bottoms. However, this news (see story, below) and the stock's almost 5% dividend yield combined with this news tip me to the "trading buy" side, with probably a normal 6-8% stop loss. Cheers, chrisco Activist Investor To Sell 10M Shrs In New York Times -CNBC Oct 17, 2007 09:37:13 (ET) NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Morgan Stanley, representing an activist shareholder, is expected to sell 10 to 10.5 million shares in New York Times Co. Appears to be at/near bottom of trading range / forming bottom of a base. Right at 200-day moving average. Dividend yield is around 3.8%. And it's a great paper. Share structure, control issues and long-term decline of newspaper circ are negatives. That it is possibly America's best newspaper are positives.
