More Losses For Office Depot Office Depot (NYSE:ODP) reported a second-quarter net loss of 1 cent per diluted share on revenue of $3.6 billion. The company earned 4 cents per share after excluding special items. Although both numbers beat the analyst expectations of 1 cent per share earnings and $3.56 billion in revenue, Office Depot provided some ominous clues on the direction of the economic downturn, and prepared for further deterioration. Office Depot's North American retail division was the main culprit in the loss for the quarter, with an operating loss of $4 million and sales down ...

Do we have room in this economy for three major office supply stores? The battle between Staples (SPLS), OfficeMax (OMX), and Office depot (ODP) remind me of several other Big Box battles past and present. Anyone remember Home Quarters? Did we really have room for more than Two (Home Depot and Lowes) big box DIY retail stores? What about the mess between Ciruit City and Ultimate Electronics competing with Best Buy? Kmart lost to Target and Walmart...Sears might not be far behind. Barnes and Noble, Borders, and Books-A-Million is shaping up to be a good fight too. Which one ...

Office Depot's Questionable Analyst Call Program
ODP

Office Depot (NYSE:ODP) has run into some rather stupid problems. The allegations are that members of the Investor Relations Staff pro-actively made phone calls to sell side analysts approximately one week before the company filed an 8K warning of bad news. The allegations continue with the proposition that as a result of these individual phone calls analysts concluded earnings will be worse than predicted. This resulted in precipitous selling activity as brokers sold ODP shares and or purchased puts. The SEC apparently is involved and the fiasco continues to unfold much like peelin...

In his 'Master Trading' portfolio, Bernie Schaeffer uses fundamental, technical and sentiment metrics to select trades. Here's a trio of ideas from Schaeffer's Investment Research.
"I have initiated a long position in Office Depot (NYSE: ODP). Price action for ODP has been strong, with the equity gaining more than 108% year-to-date. "Recently, the equity pulled back to its 20-day moving average. There is heavy out-of-the-money put open interest for ODP. An unwinding of the short positions related to this open interest could provide a tailwind for the stock. <>"In addition, upgrades are a pos>...

Staples: Who Said it Was Easy?
Staples ( SPLS) has a legacy of making the buying of office supplies easy for their customers. But the last couple of years have been anything but easy for the company. On the other hand, compared to their major competitors, they indeed make running an office supply company look easy. Competition Over time, shareholders of a public company will be rewarded proportionately to how well the business performs. In the long run, earnings determine market price. This is what Ben Graham meant by his long-term “The market is a weighing machine” metaphor. <>In Figure 1 below, we correlate Staples' mo>...

Staples' earnings drop, but meet expectations
Filed under: Earnings reports, Wal-Mart (WMT), Office Depot (ODP), OfficeMax Inc (OMX), Staples Inc (SPLS) Staples (NASDAQ: SPLS), a seller of office supplies and a competitor of chains such as Office Depot (NYSE: ODP), OfficeMax (NYSE: OMX), and Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT), reported Q2 earnings on Tuesday. Although they weren't that great, I can't say I felt they were a total disaster, either. I think the quarter was lackluster and indicative of the immense work ahead for management in terms of getting people into their stores and increasing sales per transaction. <>According to the press release, t>...
