With Oracle's recent purchase of Sun Microsystems for net $5.7bn or so, it gains all the software and systems ingredients it needs to begin delivering new database appliances, storage appliances and network appliances. Through 2010 and beyond, expect the market for appliances (specialized boxes that do a job better than a PC+software could) explode. Larry is also an expert at removing costs, and a "right-sized" Sun could deliver huge upside in the right hands.

The company said its fiscal third-quarter net income fell slightly to $1.33 billion, or 26 cents a share, from $1.34 billion, or 26 cents a share, a year earlier. Excluding special items, earnings would've been 35 cents a share. Revenue for the period rose 2% to $5.45 billion. Not bad for lean season. DHS hasn't put any heavy weight in costs either but we'lll have to watch out for that again
