"Seattle-based Plum Creek Timber (NYSE: PCL), the nation's largest private landowner with more than eight million acres, has caught our eye," says Bill Martin.

In his BullMarket.com advisory, he explains, "Earnings have been stunted in recent quarters by the housing slump, but the company sports a strong balance sheet and an asset base that thanks to nature only gets larger and more valuable as time goes by."

I have been a fan/holder of Plum Creek Timber (PCL) for clients since before I started this web site. I've written about it a few times over the years and I just continue to hold it.

I've known about the stock since my days at Lehman Brothers (1989-1991) when it was still an MLP. I think I first read about the diversification benefits of timber/lumber sometime in the mid 1990s.

There’s a classic squeeze going on in the timber markets right now. 

Plum Creek Timber is a REIT that took a beating becaue of it's association with home builders.

PCL owns ands manages timber lands. When people need 2x4s to build houses PCL has better selling rights to their timbers, but still even in today's market the company is able to pay over 4% in dividends.

It's the type of business that maintains its value with limited over head during the down cycle and is ready to roar when things gets better. In the mean time people need paper.
