ING International Real Estate Fund Manager’s Top Picks

<><>Steve Burton, portfolio manager of ING’s International Real Estate Fund, talked about his top stock picks with Barron’s on 6/9/08. He likes companies that he considers controlling “fortress malls” (top-class shopping centers with strong anchors) as protection against a challenging economy. In 2007, though his fund was barely up, it was on average almost 16% better than other international real estate funds, and he finished in the top 2% of all real estate funds, so he is worth listening to. 40% of his fund is invested in Asia where growth is stronger. Dividends Talk, Here's What We Think They're Saying

I believe dividends talk. They may speak softly or be ignored altogether, but they talk just the same. I have often noted that the voice of the dividend is the most important voice to listen to because it represents the considered opinions of a company's board of directors. In this way dividends speak as much about the future as the past.
Most of us do not invest in the actual US economy. It has recently become a parlor game of sorts to bet on whether or not the US economy is in recession. I don’t think it matters much whether the US has an official recession in the coming year or not.
