Tobacco execs may be scum, but not dumb. Smokers will smoke more as recession fears deepen. Increased taxes breeds smuggling and counterfeit tax stamps. Tobacco companies can outlast individual smokers in court and the current feeling against trial lawyers provides congress cover to eliminate all class action suits. Basic fundamentals of MO and PM are strong. (e.g. MO has 40% market share & both have cash flow)

<> The accompanying table presents a 20-stock defensive growth portfolio which I believe will outperform the overall market as measured by the S&P 500 Index as the current panic trade comes to an end and investors stop selling stocks regardless of their fundamentals. The average PEG ratio for this group of stocks is below one and the average dividend yield of 4.4% is nearly two times the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) yield of 2.4%. +ve - Potential growth in China & possibly in Europe - No revenue from US which is a high litigation risk market - Weak economy = More Smokers = More smokes per smoker!! Like it or not but it's a fact :-) - Buyers are addicted and brand has a lot of value and they have the biggest ones out there - Decent dividend yield -ve - Recent buy of Rothman, Canada - second largest in Canada. Again getting into litigation risks. If the risk doesn't materialize this will be +ve - Weak dollar - Most of the revenue is International, so a strong dollar WILL HURT - M...
