A drop in the number of newly laid-off workers and upbeat remarks from bellwether Cisco Systems injected confidence about an economic recovery ahead of this morning’s highly expected October jobs report, propelling the Dow average to its first close above 10,000 in two weeks. 

Cisco Systems’ (NASDAQ:CSCO) CEO John Chambers said he now sees a global economic recovery, fueling a rebound in the company’s sales this quarter.  The Dow average jumped 203 points, or 2%, while the tech-heavy NASDAQ, riding high on Cisco’s forecast, bolted up 50 points or about 2.4%.

Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) reported mixed financial results for its fourth quarter of fiscal 2009. Quarterly revenue of $2.69 billion was down 19% year-over-year and was down 2% sequentially. This was primarily due to lower sales of the company’s wireless chipsets and other related technologies. Fourth quarter revenue was also below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.71 billion. On a GAAP basis, quarterly net income was $803 million or 48 cents per share. This was down 9% year-over-year and also down 9% sequentially. Qualcomm FY Q4 Slightly Light; Q1, FY 2010 Outlook Below The Street; But Stock Gains

Qualcomm (QCOM) this afternoon posted somewhat disappointing results for its fiscal fourth quarter ended September 27, and a similarly lackluster outlook for both Q1 and FY 2010.

For the quarter, the wireless chip company posted revenue of $2.69 billion, down 19% year-over-year and 2% sequentially, and below the Street at $2.72 billion. The company posted diluted EPS of 48 cents, below the Street at 52 cents.
