What do you get when you decide to buy the dog of the drugstore chains on December 31, 2008? Why, a gain of 370%!!! This much maligned drugstore chain is slowly creeping out of the cellar and few are paying attention. Can the Chain continue its climb? It depends on whether it continues to tweak its front end plan. I agree with willwillywilson! Excluding non-cash charges, Rite Aid has pared loss from FY-08 of ($1.29/sh.) to FY-09 loss of ($0.79/sh); and Q4-08 loss ($0.29/sh) down to Q4-09 loss ($0.14/sh). New, energetic, savvy management and B/D members; over 26B revenue; shedding sub-producer stores; cost cutting; lots of new efficiencies; great potential.

Easy comparisons and relatively favorable weather helped increase same-store sales in the typically weak month of October for retailers, up 1.8% from the year-earlier level but below the 2% growth expectation. Results for this series, which tracks data for stores open at least a year from 30 major retailers, had come ahead of expectations the last two months.
As a result of the financial crisis last fall, conditions were extremely bad in October of last year, when retail sales were down 4.1%.
