Shares of Canadian fixed and wireless phone company Rogers Communications (RCI) rose 78 cents, or 3%, this morning, after reporting Q3 sales in line with estimates and profit ahead of expectations.

The Toronto, Ontario firm said revenue in the quarter rose 2% to 3.04 billion Canadian, in line with estimates, yielding profit per share of 82 Canadian cents, up 15% and ahead of the 53-cent estimate.

When last we left the Waterloo, Ontario-based maker of BlackBerries, Research in Motion’s (RIM) shares were falling like a rock. Or, perhaps, like a kitchen knife. The stock is down $1.63 today, or 2.4%, at $67.28, after falling as low as $66.67, and down 19% since offering a lackluster outlook on Thursday night.

Research In Motion (RIM) will pay $267.5 million to settle a patent infringement lawsuit brought on by Visto Corp., Bloomberg reports.

In exchange, RIM will get a perpetual and fully-paid license on all Visto patents and certain intellectual property.

According to Bloomberg, Visto's lawsuit alleged RIM was illegaly using its technology. RIM claimed that Visto's patents contained no new inventions.

What's Twitter's big secret plan for making money? We don't know. But here's another guess: In part, by allowing advertisers to sponsor single sites featuring live-updates from all Twitter users regarding a single topic or event -- like the one Twitter created for the elections at elections.twitter.com, but for marketer-friendly events like the Super Bowl (Bud), Christmas (Target) or a Steve Jobs keynote (RIM) speech instead.

Earnings reports continue to dribble in as the quarter winds down. Much of the attention this week will be on homebuilders KB Home (NYSE: KBH) and Lennar Corp. (NYSE: LEN) as investors look for any sign that the housing sector has bottomed (home sales numbers are also due out this week; see below). Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial anticipate that both companies will report that they narrowed their losses in the most recent quarter.
